Gallery 7, Yorkville Toronto Ontario 2001
Performance Title: The Business of Art
Galery 7, Yorkville Toronto, ON. 11/08/01.
Performance: 40-minutes. Installation: 2-weeks.
Theme: The tensions between perceived personal aesthetic preferences and the packaging of aesthetics for exchange in the market place intrigue me. Trade marked Ralph Lauren home decorator paint chips are exchanged with visitors during the performance. Multiples of these are also available for taking during the month long installation exhibition. Water is another medium used during the performance, and when shown overflow water in a dish, visitors in Toronto dipped their fingers into the water as shown in the photograph, and it being a hot day, sprinkled it on themselves.
Treatment: Throughout the real time performance, a television monitor positioned beside her shows a recording of the artist teaching in another time and space. This recording is replaced during the follow-up installation with the recording of the performance that took place in that same gallery space.
