Le Rouge et Le Noire

The 19th century French philosopher, Stendhal’s book by the same name inspired the title of the painting shown, and the exhibition title. The book, Le Rouge et Le Noire, was written at the time of the French Revolution, when the colour black signified the priesthood and the colour red signified the military. During 1830-32, Stendhal and Balzac developed the techniques of the realist novel that has influenced the worlds literature today.
