Designs on a Mature Olympia © 1998 – 2008 – 3-minute. Video clip

Theme:
Performance art video. This video comments on the inner and outer psychodramatics of stereotype erotica where space becomes that of perception and consciousness. It references the historical in regard to aesthetic discussion on voyeurism and the gaze (ie Cézanne’s painting “A Modern Olympia”), while also implicating the role of shifts in film and video technology during the ten year period that the video was created.

Technique – Analogue to Digital:
Painted colorful ink designs are applied onto found 16 mm. medical film celuloid that has first had some of the emolsion, and thus images, removed using bleach. Intermittant ghostly images randomly show through the designs.

Performance Video
This 16 mm film format of rapidly flickering ink designs ghostly images is projected onto the upper torso of the artist’s body as she slowly turns in front of one of her paintings. It is also projected onto a white table cloth with an embossed design that remains constant.
A video camera using VHS tapes (1998) is set on a tripod to record this performance.

Creating the Digital Video
The original magnetic VHS video clips described above and created in 1998 are digitized through a deck onto my MacBook using i-movie in 2008. Using a single channel timeline, transitions and public domain sound clips the new video is created. Technologically and aesthetically this new video references historical time in video-making from analogue to digital format with implications for shifts in perception of human identity.
