“Out of Time”
Theme: The aesthetic repetitions of everyday acts that occur around a burial site heighten awareness of denial of mortality and resistance to letting go. My work which examines issues of mortality, uses ritual acts and references to archiving memory to show ways that we both resist and bridge our mortality.
Inspiration: The video and installation are dedicated to the memory of Marvin Lee Hawkins 1949-2003. Although developed for use in a computer programmed interactive installation, it is powerful work on its own.
Treatment: Using Final Cut Pro3 as an editing tool, each act and gesture around a burial is repeated five times. The significance of repetition reinforces awareness of everyday rituals we engage in that help resist and bridge mortality. That they are repeated five times reference the spiritual significance of the number five in many historical cultures.
Sound: The sound of the video shown alone is different than when shown as part of the installation. The sound attached to each video clip remains with the clip. The repetition captures only the cadence and varying pitches of human voices.
