Video Projection Installation

Signs of Refraction – Video Projection Installation ©2001
Video images of books are projected through a series of upright and angled transparent Plexiglas panels that simultaneously capture, reflect and refract. The work raises questions about the futility of our efforts to contain and archive that which is fluid, e.g. ideas. It contrasts the video book titles used which can be located in a history of ideas. The sound is a layered mix of the artist’s musings, household activities, and of tap water running and draining. The visitor’s movements and positioning within the installation space affects consciousness.

Poem written that inspired the installation:
Title: “What moment in time”

“Like that split second which marks the boundary of consciousness and sleep. Where the energy of the mind refracts like light and creates distorted dreams. But then the energy that permeates the conscious mind is also bent during processing and what then is the truth of what we see
 and hear.” S. Hawkins
